She moved to the United States in 1989 from the Middle East, where she worked as a make up artist for one of the major local TV stations as well as a salon manager. One of her specialties is “threading.” Called khite in Arabic, it is primarily used for removing facial hair at the root. Rows of stray hairs are removed with twists of cotton thread. The practitioner holds one end of the cotton thread in her teeth and the other in her left hand. The middle is looped through the index and the middle fingers of the right hand. The loop traps unwanted hairs and pulls them out by the root. It is considered less painful than plucking or waxing, especially for those with sensitive skin. This method also encourages blood flow to the skin, mimicking a facial while removing the hair.
